Pakistan has done more than anyone else in war against terror

President Pervaiz Musharraf has rubbished do more rhetoric from US and said there is no secret understanding over cross-border attacks. Pakistan has done more than anyone else in war against terror.

Talking to media before his departure to US for lectures, Musharraf said India should stop talking about surgical strikes, as Pakistan is ready to cope up any adventure with full force.

Replying to a question, Musharraf said Mumbai attacks created war hysteria in India and Pakistan.

He said said root causes of terrorism needed to be address and this is the time to resolve Kashmir and Palestine issue. He declined to comment on government's performance.

Pakistan has done more than any other nation in the global war against terrorism, former President Pervez Musharraf said, in defense of his country's response to the attacks in Mumbai.

"Pakistan has lost a large number of security personnel and civilians in the fight against terrorism," Musharraf said today in a televised interview from Islamabad. "The world community, including India and Pakistan, must fight the root of extremism and terrorism."

HINDU fundamentalists in indiA

Today the whole world is talking about the terror attacks on India by Pakistani
terrorists. Every TV channel in the world, every newspaper is filled with the
heart-breaking stories and pictures of the tragedy that began on the night of
26th November 2008. The government of India has very generously granted lakhs
of rupees to the families of the deceased. US has sent their representatives to
promote peace talks between India & Pakistan . Every person in the world has
condemned the terrorists and their disgustful acts. Signature campaigns and
public demands have caused top government officials to resign.

Today, the police are claiming that all terrorists are either dead or arrested.
There is no need to fear, none of them are on the loose.

But, is that really true?

Allow me to take you back to a few incidents (I call them 'terror-attacks')
that happened right here in India , just a few months ago. Only it wasn't in
Mumbai, but another lesser known state Orissa.
Priests were killed. Beaten up. Hammered and left bleeding naked on
the streets to die.
- Nuns were raped.
- Children were burnt alive.
- Christians killed and cut to pieces.
- Rajni Machi, a 20-year-old HINDU girl, who was rejected by her
parents because she was the eldest of 7 girls (the parents wanted a son),
adopted by Fr. Edward Sequeira, was gang-raped by HINDU fundamentalists, and
burnt alive.

- Hundreds of Churches & villages burnt and destroyed
- 60,000 plus Christians fled to the forests, with no food, no shelter,
no sufficient clothing to keep them warm in the bitter cold.
- Volunteers from Mumbai and other parts of the country not allowed to
go and help the victims.

- No provisions were allowed to be sent to them.
- Even today, 1000s of these poor, helpless Christians are hiding in
the cold, dangerous forests, with no one to help them.

Now tell me are these fundamentalists any better that the terrorists? I say no,
they are as much a terrorists as the ones who came from Pakistan . In fact,
even worse. The terrorists who attacked Mumbai, attacked their enemies. The
Indian fundamentalists, attacked their own brothers - fellow Indians.

And these terrorists in Orissa are still roaming around boasting about their
great deeds. The Chief Minister of Orissa, Naveen Patnaik still sits on his
throne. The attacks in Mumbai have ceased after 3 days. The attacks in Orissa
still continue.

Will someone do something? Can we demand justice for the suffering? Or is that
reserved only for the elite class of Taj & Oberoi in Mumbai. Some of those who
were caught in the Taj and Oberoi have been saved and given a second chance in
life. Can the people of Orissa expect the same?

Many of you reading this are in different parts of the world. Some of you are
in the US . Can someone take this message to the US President? Will they force
the government of India to send the army to Orissa and other parts of India
that are under attack?

What will you do? Will you just forward it to a few 'safe' friends and forget
about it? Will you take a stand to talk to every person you can about this
injustice? Will you promise not to stop spreading this message till Orissa is
freed of terrorists? We need a country that is free. Will you join this freedom
struggle like Gandhiji once did?

Sir Dr. Allama Iqbal (National Poet Of Pakistan)

Inspirational Poems

W i s h

O Allah! The practices of all these people are so tiresome,
That even within their midst I feel so lonesome.
The noise of the world urges me to run away
To a quiet place where silence begins and ends each day.
A place where movement will always yield to stillness,
And speech is completely awed by silence.
Sometimes I feel I am dying for this quietness;
To live in a hut near a mountain will be pure bliss.
The worries of the world burden me greatly, and from them I wish to part
Then I can live in solitude while the thorns of sadness leave my heart.
These birds who sit in the tree singing all day long…
Their chirping is beautiful and will be my song.
When I am in need of music I will listen to the waterfall's sound.
Harmony existing between the birds' song and the water rushing down.
The wine cup will be my view, the buds my messengers.
These two friends will inform me of any visitors.
With my hand for a pillow and grass for my bed,
I shall pass away the nights with good thoughts in my head.
This is the best way to live, among all this tranquil solitude.
It helps put to shame and open the eyes of the multitude.
The nightingale will know me so well that she will sit near,
Because she shall know that I would never cause her any fear.
On both sides of the river will be flowers gazing at their reflection,
In the cool, clear blue water, as it runs with perfection.
The mountain scenery just beyond the river will be beautifully exquisite,
That even the water will try to rise in waves just to see it.
In the lap of earth all greenery shall be at rest,
And the water will return among the bushes to glisten at its best.
Gazing at its reflection will be the bending branch of a tree,
Just as a maiden perches by a mirror, admiring her beauty.
When the sun puts henna on the evening bride, the flowers present a golden chest,
That the bride can take this along with her as a gift from all the rest.
When travelers get tired in the night and are looking for a place to stay,
Let my broken lamp provide hope for them to wander my way.
O Allah! Whenever the dark clouds are hovering in the sky,
Let lightning illuminate my hut so they wont pass it by.
The early dawn cuckoo is the caller of prayer, and I listen to her
Instead of the priest's sermons; I listen to the azaan coming from this bird.
When dew falls on the flowers as a ceremonious cleansing,
My tears will be my wudu and my prayer will be a blessing.
Let my voice depart from this place and touch the caravan of stars above me,
So it can ring a bell to signify we should all live peacefully.
O Allah! Let my cry make all those empathetic hearts ache,
And the ones who are unconscious or indifferent, awake.

Child And The Lamp

Oh little one! At the lamp you gaze,
Examining all of the ways,
The moths move about.
You stare and observe the flame spellbound.
Then in my lap you start to move around.
Are you trying to get closer to the light?
You become more and more perplexed,
You heart is baffled by these insects,
Trying to recognize this scene.
The fire the lamp holds is small,
You contain the biggest flame of all.
You are an undivided light.
How is it that the lamp's flame is revealed
While the one in you is concealed?
Nature has hidden it in the chandelier of clay.
The curtain of future your light hides,
And the dust covering the eye of the mind
Becomes the curtain of the future.
What we call life is nothing but negligence;
intoxication is unconsciousness.
Yet others declare life is but a dream.
If nature is what the eye wishes to see,
Then behold in every dropp the storm of beauty
Of a magnificent river-the world of nature.
Heavenly sights surround everyone;
Grace is in the glimmering rays of the sun
And in the evening dusk's quiet enchantment.
Elegance is in the flower's colors,
Majesty in ruins of past empires-
As in a child's constant struggle to speak.
Glory is in the morning bird's symphony,
When it constructs its nest completely
And in the sparkling fountains within the mountain.
Behold the splendor in the river flowing free,
In the wild, population, desert and city.
Beauty embraces us on every side.
For something the soul continues to burn.
Otherwise, why would it yearn?
It cries like a bell in a desert.
Beauty is in every statement in the world.
Then why is the soul not comfortable?
It's like a fish struggling outside the water.

M o t h e r's D r e a m

One night when I was sleeping I had a dream,
And it was a very strange dream too.
I think I might know as to what it could mean,
And I hope what I think is not true.
I was alone, and I was going somewhere,
It was so dark I soon lost my way.
I didn't know how I was supposed to get there,
But where I was it was scary, and I couldn't stay.
Then I saw children, standing in a line,
Their clothes made out of emerald stone.
And at the end was a son of mine,
Whom I had lost so long ago.
They were all holding bright lamps that glowed,
But my son's at the end did not.
Compared to the others he walked rather slow,
And over this I pondered a lot.
I approached my son and called to him,
“Where have you come after you left me? ”
For some reason his lamp seemed to grow more dim,
Making it even harder for us to see.
I said, “I've cried so much, every day new tears,
They have formed a very long chain.
My heartache grew over the past lonesome years,
And my tears have now become the rain.”
Then he turned to me, looked and said,
“You have not helped me through your pain.
You should learn to live without me instead,
Because in your tears I have nothing to gain.”
He held up his lamp, so lifeless and dull,
Saying wile he slowly turned from me…
Your tears have extinguished it, it's not bright at all,
because you wouldn't let things just be.

Spider & The Fly

One day the spider said to the fly,
“You always pass my house, but never come inside.

“Is my house too dirty for your feet?
Why don't you come inside and have a seat?

“You avoid strangers, don't worry I understand,
but I am a very dear friend, and have only good things planned.

“My house is suitable for a queen, isn't it?
And so there are stairs in front, if you ever wish to visit.”

“Mr. Spider, I'm too clever, ” was the answer of the fly.
“Go deceive someone else, but me, don't even try.

“Whoever climbs your stairs forever remains trapped,
Mr. Spider, I'm too smart, you should've thought of that! ”

Now the spider said, “You think my house is too plain for you to see?
I want you to be happy, but it's obvious you don't care about me.

“Why don't you come inside and rest your tired wings?
Inside I have kept for you many beautiful things.

“My house is made of mirrors, you'd have a lot of fun.
I have the most comfortable beds that aren't for just anyone.”

The fly answered, “All this is nice, but an offer from you will never take.
I know better than to sleep on your bed from which I would never awake.”

The spider was impressed by the cleverness of the fly,
“But how can I trap her? ” He thought, “how can I try?

“Flattery! ” He thought, “it's almost like a rule,
flatter can transform any clever thing into a fool.

“Oh respected lady! ” Said the spider, “please don't think I'd deceive you!
You are very smart, not to mention beautiful too.

Your head is decorated in jewels, and your eyes sparkle everyday.
You are gorgeous, intelligent and good. Just perfect in every way.”

As the spider continued to flatter her, the fly became more impressed.
“I have no need to fear you, ” she said, “I can get rid of my stress.

“Refusing someone's offer is not a good thing to do;
breaking someone's heart is terribly painful too.”

So with confidence the fly flew towards the spider,
As she landed on the sticky web the spider quickly caught her.

The foolishness of the fly cost her a great deal,
But the spider's hunger vanished, having eaten a delicious meal.

My hopes and wishes come upon
My lips from inside my heart.
Oh Allah! My life should be
Like a lamp, never to go dark.

Let the darkness of the world
Disappear from my presence.
Let every place become bright
From my shining existence.

Just as the flower stands with others,
Improving the garden's beauty,
Let my life stand with knowledge
And dignify my community.

My life should be built around
Those who seek the light,
Just as the moth loves the glowing lamp
In the darkness of the night.

Oh Allah! Make me strive
Constantly to educate my mind,
With the light of knowledge
That you gave me the power to find.

I want to dedicate my life to those
Who are in need of special care.
The old, the young, the ill, the hungry,
I want to be fair.

Oh Allah! You gave us choices!
Protect us from sins,
Lead us to the path of righteousness,
Help us to do good things.

*"We have been doing music together since we were six years old - as long as

"It started out as a fun thing at family functions.

"Music was very much a part of our family set-up - my father was an

Pakistani students shine at Cambridge competition

- *Shaheer Shahid*
- *Maaz Ahmed*
- *Rayyan Aziz Ansari*

Pakistani students made their country proud after they won laurels at an
international competition designed to inspire imagination.

The competition was organised by the University of Cambridge International
Examinations (CIE).

Pakistan is the only country which had winning students in every prize
category – essay writing, photography and short film making – in a
competition that tested the creative ability of more than 450 Cambridge
students from around the world.

The Cambridge competition asked students to write an essay in English, make
a short film, or take photographs which show an aspect of their school life.

According to the Cambridge International Examinations office in Islamabad,
there were three winners in the Short Film category, including Shaheer
Shahid, from Pakistan's Roots Montessori High School. His film, Life in
Roots, was shot on the day of school elections.

Maaz Ahmed, from The Fahims Schools System A-level, Karachi, won a prize in
the Photography category. His photos had a strong visual impact, in
particular a stunning image of a student flying a kite.

Rayyan Aziz Ansari, from Beaconhouse School, was a winner in the writing
category. Students were asked to write a short article on 'The best thing I
learned this year."

Rayyan concluded his reflections with the comment: 'I have learned that hard
work has no substitute, anyone who thinks differently is in for a rude
awakening.'

PRIDE OF PAKISTAN

Madam Noor Jehan's name evokes countless articles, books, discussions but
strangely anecdotes and analysis don't reveal the real person. Some praise
her without knowing much about her while others vilify her on hearsay. Most
know of her seven decades of theatrics both on reel and in real life without
realising the struggle, dedication, perseverance and sacrifices she made to
get there. From a miserly past of poverty and ill-fame, she conquered the
subcontinent and rose to glory, wealth and undying stardom.
Fame-literate feminist, progressive, liberal, an iconoclast and not just a
singer, Noor Jehan was the last century's bona fide icon. Defying the '40s
specified norms, she broke every rule and not only stood up for herself as
emotionally self-reliant but made her personality such that people pined for
more of her. Affable in a coterie of silver screen actresses where all the
women were tarred with the same brush, Noor Jehan's witty retorts,
calculated intimacy, self-deprecating manner combined with the immense
self-confidence of a woman who had seen and experienced everything made her
flagrantly eclectic *In the early days before song-recording became
available, singers had to accompany actors on location and sing from behind
the camera. Later, when recording techniques became available, singers had
to start all over again if a musician made a mistake. Throughout the '40s
Noor Jehan continued making films and playback singing. Awaz De Kahan Hai,
1946 super-hit song from Anmol Ghari became synonymous with Noor Jehan. In
1959 Nigar Awards introduced the best singer category and the first award
went to Noor Jehan for the film Koel's Dil Ka Diya Jalaya composed by the
genius Khursheed Anwar and written by Tanveer Naqvi. She won again in 1967,
'69, '71, '90 and '91.*

Rehan (r) was also nominated by the International Hockey Federation (FIH)
along with Jong Ho Seo of South Korea in the World All-Star hockey team.
Dec 20: Pakistan's leading forward Rehan Butt was declared the 'Best Asian
Player' by the Asian Hockey Federation in Malaysia on Saturday.

Speaking to Dawn,Rehan said: 'It is an honour for me to be selected as one
of the best Rehan Butt ... an honour for Pakistan.' Rehan has represented
Pakistan in 80 international matches and was named player of the Asian
tournament twice during his stint with the national squad. Regarding his
selection as the best Asian player he remarked, 'It was my individual
performance marked by the Asian hockey managers in World Cup, Champions
Trophy and the Olympics.' Rehan was also nominated by the International
Hockey Federation (FIH) along with Jong Ho Seo of South Korea in the World
All-Star hockey team. Rehan said: 'Currently I am playing with Learn
Hockey Club in The Netherlands on a contract of 20,000 Euros for six
months.' Learn hockey club, was ranked at No 11 the second lowest among 12
hockey clubs. The club, he pointed out now ranks sixth after some top
players from Asia and Europe joined them. 'I am currently the top scorer of
the club with nine goals,' he said. About his future commitments Rehan
pointed out: 'I will be featuring in the Dutch League from February to May
next year and will be available for the Asia Cup and other major
international events.' The Asia Cup is scheduled to be held next year in
Dubai. 'I am willing,' he said, 'to play for Pakistan but the top Pakistan
Hockey Federation bosses had mentioned that they only need senior players in
important international fixtures.' He added: 'I will not be playing in the
upcoming four nation hockey tournament as the priority of the federation is
to give a chance to junior players.'

Pessimism growing among Pakistanis: poll

Islamabad, Dec 20 (IANS) Most Pakistanis have a dim view of their country’s future and have no faith in the present government, an opinion poll says.
According to the poll by the US-based International Republican Institute, about 88 percent of Pakistanis feel thier country is heading in the wrong direction and 59 percent fear that 2009 will be far worse, reported the Dawn newspaper Friday.
The survey claimed that there was a high degree of pessimism and discontent in Pakistan and a majority of the people have no faith in the present government. The survey was conductd Oct 15-30.
About 76 percent of the 3,500 respondents in the four provinces of Pakistan responded negatively when asked how the government performed on issues important to them. Only 21 percent answered positively.
About 67 percent said that democracy had made no difference to their wellbeing. These ratings are slightly worse than the sentiment in January 2008, shortly before the parliamentary elections of February.
The poll saw an increase in the number of people who felt less secure this year than they did last year, up from 15 percent in June to 78 percent in October.
The high of 85 percent occurred in January in the aftermath of the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
The growing discontent has also taken a toll on the popularity of political leaders. The average popularity of leaders dropped to 22 percent this time from 43 percent recorded in a June poll.
Only Benazir and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif received more than 50 percent of support.

pageant, a Toronto entrepreneur named Sonia Ahmed, told the newspaper that
she had been making plans to take the pageant to Pakistan as soon as next

favorable for aspiring beauty queens. Now, she is keeping the pageant in

GREAT PRESIDENT MUSHARRAF IN LONDON

Musharraf was dressed as casual as my producer Erbil and I were. He was
wearing a burgundy sweater. The flat we met was very much secured. His
people were waiting for us at an agreed meeting point to take us to him.

Musharraf looked so much younger, trimmed, relaxed than I remember֠His
hairdo was too long. He came across as almost Bohemian֠We kissed each other.
Musharraf?polished politician? Or?the westernised leader?asked me about Amy
Winehouse. Realising that I am nursing my voice, I was immediately served a
hot tea with milk. We were discussing the last time we met, while he closed
the roads for me and made my presence in Pakistan very confidential. That
was not the case famously last time when I was in Pakistan as a guest of
Asif Ali Zardari֠So Musharraf?obviously asking with sarcasm: ?Daphne you are
so popular in Pakistan! When are you coming back to Pakistan??

DB: So where do you live right now?

PM: I still live in Rawalpindi. In the same house you came to interview me
and my wife. We are all there.

DB: Is this where you are going to live?

PM: No, no֠only until the construction on my house in Islamabad finishes.

DB: So what are you doing right now?

PM: I just finished reading my own book. I needed to reflect.

DB: Was your book successful?

PM: I don?t know if the book was successful. I think it was because of the
media, but I need to look at the numbers of the publishing house to know how
much they sold.

DB: While usually in the publishing world, you should be happy with the
advance you get֮ Are you writing a sequel?

PM: Yes, I am thinking to write another book. And?to go on the lecture
circuits.

DB: Did you start writing the book yet?

PM: Not yet. The whole situation in Pakistan got me and others in a state of
shock.

DB: Like hitting bottom!

PM: Yes, like hitting bottom. And I agree with you Daphne that after hitting
bottom?maybe better things would happen.

DB: Did you sort out your lecture circuits?

PM: Not yet֠I am going to start doing it. I am just looking for the right
timing and right representative for me.

DB: Do you feel secure in Pakistan right now?

PM: I would not leave Pakistan. It is my home. Am I safe there completely?
Of course not. If there are risks but it is not new for me to live with
risk. The Army is protecting me. But of course?everything is possible.

DB: Do you intend to stay in Pakistan?

PM: Of course! My son went back to California but I have a daughter who
lives in Karachi. She organises musical events. Pakistan is my country. The
country is in a very bad shape. I brought foreign investments. I built
roads. Nobody invests there anymore.

I am joking with Musharraf that unlike his predecessors, he is the first
ruler of Pakistan that has not been executed, put in jail or exiled.

PM: I know you are getting a lot of emails from people who would like to
have me back. You told me so! With the current situation in Pakistan it is
difficult for them to contact me. I care about my country and I hope you can
come and visit without streets being closed around you.

DB: You know Benazir was close to me, like a big sister.

PM: Yes֠I knew. I also understood what you were doing with your interview
with Sanam Bhutto, tribute with Bilawal and so on. You were helping Zardari
to win the elections!

DB: I thought I was helping democracy in Pakistan. That?s what Asif kept
telling meּbr>
PM: (Musharraf smiles) Well, you are getting lots of feedback from the
people of Pakistan. You just told me yourself even members of the PPP
(Bhutto?s party) are very disappointed (from Zardari?s conduct).

DB: The frustration conveyed to me, in all these emails, is because of the
declining economy and the escalating violence.

PM: This kind of violence has never happened during my time֠I made my mind
early on that I was going with America against terrorism. I have done
anything in my power to block terrorists and fundamentalists. There is only
one way to deal with terrorists?to fight them.

DB: Now, on top of it the mess with Indiaּbr>
PM: Well, you know if you don?t fight terror and make sure everybody knows
how strong you feel about it you may have problems with other countries like
America. And Yes?now the situation with India. This is what terror is all
about. By now?it has become a very complicated situation.

DB: You mean that if the current administration would have made it clear how
strong they are fighting against terrorism the tension between India and
Pakistan wouldn?t have occurred?

PM: (Nodding in agreement) you said itּbr>
DB: One of Zardari?s partners called me desperately recently that he is so
upset that he is suicidal and that he is losing his balance.

PM: You mean Zardari?s media partner? He may have lost his balance because
he may have drunk too much.

DB: Do you miss the good all days when you were in power?

PM: Not at all! I have found time to spend with my family and friends. But I
do care about Pakistan. It is obvious that I keep watching what is going on.

DB: Do you have any message to the people of Pakistan?

PM: Well֠you told me you were going to send me some of the many emails you
get from Pakistani people who are going through pains because of the current
situation. I would love to!

DB: Especially young people!

PM: Yeah, I would love to communicate with them. Please doּbr>
DB: Actually?many emails are very flattering to you, even some from PPP
members.

PM: Yeah?

DB: Many emails are relatively flattering to you. I even have emails from
PPP members who say that they never thought they will miss you, but they do.

PM: (Musharraf laughing) the problem is that the media in Pakistan always
shows negative images. I don?t watch TV too often, but whenever I do?they
show people beating each other, violence in the streets, what kind of image
does it give to Pakistan in the eyes of the world.

DB: Isn?t the media supposed to report news worthy events?

PM: Yes, but in a more balanced responsible way.

Towards the end, we mentioned few names of leaders. Musharraf says that he
still feels welcomed among them, not the loneliness which comes usually
after separation from power. For example?Turkey: ?Prime Minister Erdogan has
been a very close friend. He is my friend.? So a friendly Musharraf promises
to call me soon and returns to the fragile country he left behind.
