The Government of Pakistan has accorded a high priority to the development
of Pakistan's higher-education sector and special significance has been
placed on scientific disciplines, particularly engineering sciences and
technology, in order to promote the economic development of the country. It
has also been recognized that education, and particularly technical
education, should be linked to subsequent employment. The imperative need is
to produce a significant number of engineers, trained to world-class
standards. These engineers must be capable of competing and excelling in the
production of goods and services in today's global, knowledge-driven world.
They must contribute effectively to the global market while addressing the
key indigenous needs of Pakistan.
The Government of Pakistan has decided to establish a number of new
technical universities, designated as Universities of Engineering, Science
and Technology of Pakistan (UESTPs), which are expected to create the
infrastructure and lead the way to '*Engineering Pakistan*'. Each of the
UESTPs will be established together with a Technology Park, which is
expected to play a key role in attracting leading high-technology foreign
companies to Pakistan while also serving to provide an outlet for the
creative talents of Pakistani engineers graduating from the UESTPs.The close
link between the education provided by the UESTPs and the opportunities for
commercialisation will empower the UESTPs in a manner hitherto unknown in
Pakistan.
